A Selection of Terroirs
Anjou Villages is a sub-regional appellation, reserved for reds, that singles out Anjou's best terroirs: well-drained, early-ripening, well-exposed ground, mostly on schist, sometimes overlaid with a gravelly formation. It covers forty-six communes south of Angers. Unlike red Anjou, only Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are permitted here, with no accessory variety.
The Style of the Wines
This rigour — the best soils, noble grape varieties, controlled yields, extended ageing until the spring following the harvest — produces reds deeper and more structured than regional Anjou: a deep colour, ripe fruit, silky tannins and genuine ageing potential, around five to six years. The most serious face of Anjou Cabernet.
