Cairanne — terroir, soils & grape varieties

Recognised as a Côtes du Rhône cru in 2016, Cairanne had made its name well before gaining its appellation. Its spicy, well-structured Grenache reds rank among the most consistent in the southern valley.

A long-awaited cru

Cairanne, in Vaucluse, was one of the most renowned Côtes du Rhône Villages communes, long entitled to add its name. Its promotion to cru was recognised in 2016 and confirmed in 2018 following an appeal.

Along with Vinsobres and Rasteau, it is one of the latest promotions in a series that has redrawn the southern Rhône hierarchy since the 1970s.

Garrigue, marl and safre sands

The vineyard is divided between a plateau of pebbles and safres to the south and higher slopes of marl and limestone scree to the north. This diversity permits blends balancing power and freshness.

The surrounding garrigue is more than scenery: it leaves an aromatic imprint of thyme, rosemary and bay leaf regularly found in tastings.

A consistent style

Red Cairanne stands out for its consistency: dark fruit, spice, garrigue, ripe tannins and freshness that avoids the heaviness often found in southern Grenache. Potential ranges from five to twelve years depending on the cuvée.

A small white production based on Clairette, Roussanne and Grenache blanc complements the appellation. Serve reds at 16–17°C and whites at 11°C.
