The qualitative heart of the Fronsadais
Nestled in the communes of Fronsac and Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac is a small appellation — about 300 hectares — enclosed within the Fronsac area, of which it occupies the most celebrated slopes. Historically, its wines ranked among the most prized in the Bordeaux region.
The terroir: the limestone slope of Saint-Émilion, extended
The Canon-Fronsac slope is none other than the geological extension of the great Saint-Émilion slope: here one finds the same asteria limestone and the molasse of the Fronsadais. The rugged relief prevents any water stagnation, and the proximity of the Isle and Dordogne rivers protects the vineyard from spring frosts — ideal conditions for ripe, healthy grapes.
The style of the wines
On these limestone slopes, the dominant merlot, supported by cabernet franc, yields dense, deeply coloured, distinguished reds with a firm tannic structure and lovely freshness. These are cellar-worthy wines that develop notes of ripe fruit, spice and sometimes truffle over the years — excellent value for the curious wine lover.
