Coteaux de l'Aubanceterroir, soils & grape varieties

Between the Loire and the Layon, around Brissac, Coteaux de l'Aubance is a discreet producer of sweet chenin. Harvested overripe, its wines offer sweet whites of great finesse, less opulent than the great sweet wines of the neighbouring Layon.

The Aubance Valley

Across eight communes around Brissac, between the Loire and the Layon, the appellation follows the small Aubance river. Granted AOC status as early as 1950, it is devoted to sweet chenin whites, with a sweetness range running from ten to forty-five grams of sugar per litre.

Harvest and Style

Chenin is harvested overripe, by hand in successive pickings, with the concentration happening on the vine, with or without noble rot. The musts must reach a high sugar content, higher still for the "sélection de grains nobles" designation. The result is elegant, fresh sweet whites, lighter than the great sweet wines of the Layon, to enjoy as an aperitif or with dessert.
