Gros Plant du Pays Nantais — terroir, soils & grape varieties

The other white wine of the Pays Nantais, alongside Muscadet. Made from folle blanche — known locally as "gros plant" — and often aged sur lie, it is a very crisp, briny dry white wine, the historic companion to seafood from the Atlantic coast.

The Briny White of the Nantais

Produced across the Nantais vineyard, from Ancenis to Pornic, with extensions into Maine-et-Loire and Vendée, Gros Plant is the region's second great white wine after Muscadet. Long classified as VDQS, it was promoted to AOC in 2011. It is made from folle blanche, a grape variety known locally as "gros plant".

Terroir and Style

Like Muscadet, it rests on the crystalline bedrock of the Armorican Massif — predominantly granite and schist — over healthy, shallow soils. Often aged "sur lie", it draws freshness and a light sparkle from this. Its signature is a bright acidity and briny character that make it the perfect match with oysters and shellfish, to be drunk young and well chilled.
