Facing Sauternes country
The Loupiac appellation covers the commune of the same name, on the right bank of the Garonne, about forty kilometres from Bordeaux — directly opposite Sauternes country. Its hillside vineyards, facing the river, benefit from an exposure and microclimate favourable to the production of sweet wines.
Noble rot and grape varieties
As on the opposite bank, Loupiac's whites are born of grapes affected by noble rot, the fungus that dehydrates and shrivels the berries to concentrate their sugars. Sémillon dominates the blend by a wide margin — up to 80% — bringing richness and power; sauvignon adds an aromatic touch and freshness, with muscadelle completing the assemblage.
The style of the wines
Loupiac is a golden, unctuous and fragrant sweet wine, with notes of candied fruit, honey and flowers. Generally gentler and lighter than a great Sauternes, it charms with its balance and drinkability, and suits an aperitif as well as pairings with foie gras or blue cheeses — all at a very reasonable price.
