Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire — terroir, soils & grape varieties

The smallest of the Muscadet communal appellations runs along the Loire northeast of Nantes, from Carquefou to Ancenis. On its schist hillsides overlooking the river, melon de Bourgogne gains in tension and character.

The River Hillsides

Northeast of Nantes, this appellation follows the Loire along its hillsides, from Carquefou to Varades via Ancenis, overlooking the river. It is the smallest of the three Muscadet communal appellations, covering about 150 hectares.

Terroir and Style

The soils are dominated by the volcanic and metamorphic rocks of the Armorican Massif — gneiss, granite, micaschist and "green rocks" — with a strong presence of schist. These well-exposed hillsides give melon de Bourgogne, often aged sur lie, dry white wines that are more taut and mineral, with an assertive personality.
