The southern Rhône's northernmost cru
Vinsobres, in Drôme provençale, was promoted to cru in 2006, leaving Côtes du Rhône Villages. It produces red wine only, within a single commune.
Its position between the southern Rhône and the first pre-Alpine foothills makes it distinctive: mountain influences are already felt here, unlike further south.
Altitude and Syrah
Vineyards rise from two hundred to five hundred metres on south-facing slopes in a landscape of lavender and garrigue. Soils combine marl, red clay and limestone gravel.
The rules require a high proportion of Syrah alongside Grenache, more than in most neighbouring crus. Together with cool nights, this choice explains the wines' taut, peppery profile.
Southern freshness
Vinsobres is a deeply coloured red with blackcurrant, violet and pepper, firm but fine tannins and acidity that lengthens the palate. It can evoke the northern Rhône more than the south.
Age for five to twelve years and serve around 16–17°C with red meats or game.
