The northeastern extension of Saint-Émilion
Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion occupies the commune of Puisseguin, a northeastern extension of the Saint-Émilion area on the right bank of the Barbanne. It is one of the four Saint-Émilion satellites, with which it shares its geology and spirit.
The terroir: limestone table and molasse
The central part of the appellation rests on a plateau of asteria limestone, inherited from the marine deposits of the Tertiary era. At the foot of this limestone table, the slope rests on the molasse of the Fronsadais, a soft, lacustrine limestone rock. This cool, well-drained limestone subsoil structures the wines and gives them backbone.
The style of the wines
With nearly 80% merlot, supported by cabernet franc and a little cabernet sauvignon, Puisseguin produces generous reds with a deep colour and a firm structure. These are characterful wines that benefit from a few years' ageing, carried by estates such as Châteaux des Laurets and Branda.
