Carignan
Long a high-yield grape variety, carignan is being reborn through its old vines. On the schist soils of the Languedoc, at low yields, it produces powerful, deeply coloured, spicy reds full of southern character.
The aromatic profile
Carignan offers intense black-fruit aromas, spices, liquorice and notes of garrigue scrubland. Deeply coloured and lively, it combines power and freshness — especially from old vines, which concentrate the fruit and tame its rusticity.
Structure, terroir and table
Rich in tannins and acidity, it needs low yields and poor soils — the schist of the Languedoc, Roussillon and Corsica — to give its best. Often vinified by carbonic maceration to soften it, it is blended with grenache and syrah, or shines as a single variety from old vines. It pairs with grilled meats, game and slow-cooked dishes.
