Coulée de Serrantterroir, soils & grape varieties

One of the smallest classified terroirs in France, Coulée de Serrant is an appellation unto itself, nestled within Savennières. A legendary dry chenin, born on a south-facing schist hillside, renowned for its density and very long ageing potential.

One Hillside, One Appellation

An enclave within the Savennières plateau, on the right bank of the Loire, Coulée de Serrant occupies a single, superbly exposed hillside. It is one of the rare French appellations reduced to a single lieu-dit, devoted entirely to dry chenin.

Terroir and Style

The shallow soil combines sandy schist, volcanic rhyolite seams and wind-blown sands, under a semi-oceanic climate where the Loire tempers extremes. On this steep hillside, chenin gives a dense, supple, well-structured dry white of remarkable aromatic richness. It reaches maturity around five years and cellars for decades — one of the great chenin wines on the planet.
