Cahors — terroir, soils & grape varieties

In Lot, Cahors combines river terraces with the limestone plateaux of the causses. Malbec takes the leading role in this red-wine appellation recognised in 1971.

The Lot valley terraces

The Lot's meanders border stepped terraces where alluvium covers limestone subsoils. Textures range from sandy silt near the river to clay-rich, stony earth at the foot of the slopes. Limestone scree fans locally complete these terroirs.

The limestone causses

Above 250 metres, slopes and plateaux have soils mixing stones with clay and marl. Depth varies with geological formations; cracks in the rock allow vines to root.

A Malbec appellation

The Cahors AOC, created in 1971, is reserved for red wines. Malbec accounts for at least 70% of their blend; Merlot and Tannat may complement it. The diversity of terraces and causses distinguishes producers' vineyard locations.
