Terrasses du Larzac — terroir, soils & grape varieties

In Hérault, Terrasses du Larzac brings together blended red wines. The foothills of the causse and the Hérault and Lergue valleys form this vineyard area recognised as an AOC in 2014.

Between causse and valleys

The vineyards extend from the Larzac causse to the confluence of the Lergue and Hérault. Their Mediterranean climate benefits from the plateau's influence: nights stay cooler than on the coast.

A geological mosaic

Soils include clay and limestone, scree, rounded pebbles and marl. Sandstone, red ruffe formations and basalt occur locally. This diversity distinguishes growers' vineyard locations.

Recognition of the vineyards

Terrasses du Larzac was recognised as a Coteaux du Languedoc designation in 2005. It became an independent appellation in October 2014, reserved for red wines.
